. The Delhi metro project is an exemplary tale of the way a project of that magnitude was handled. It’s the best project management carried out for a Govt. sector project, in India, which was completed in time and within the budget. The first step in the project management of any project is to constitute a project team. And DMRC did it exactly the way it was required. THE TEAM (During phase 1and Phase2) Chairman- Ramachandran 1. Managing Director – Dr. E. Sreedharan 2. Total No. of Directors - 16 3. Nominee of Govt. of India - 5 4. Nominee of Govt. of NCTD - 5 (Including MD) 5. No. of full-time functional Directors including MD – 7 DMRC appointed Sreedharan as the project manager and the Managing Director of the Delhi metro project in November 1997. Sreedharan was a Technocrat, who had earned a reputation, during his long stint at Indian Railways, for completing major projects within the given time and budget. Delhi metro was just a feather added to his cap, but the biggest one. Earlier Sreedharan had successfully completed many huge projects like repair of Pamban Bridge, konkan Railway etc. The hiring process was slow initially as DMRC was able to recruit only 100 people; around 70% of the staff in DMRC was on deputation from the Indian Railways. DMRC had given Sreedharan complete freedom to select the project team. Sreedharan selected a motivated team of professionals whom he regarded as fundamental to the success of the project.
